The Barry University women’s basketball team volunteered at Shake-A-Leg Miami one Saturday in October in Coconut Grove. All players and coaches worked for several hours cleaning boats and waxing kayaks for the children and adults who use them. Aligning with the mission of Barry University, each athletic team completes at least one community service event per semester of their choice.
“Our women’s basketball team spent the day working hard cleaning boats and waxing kayaks” Said Bill Sullivan, head women’s basketball coach. “By helping this organization we were about to give back to our community and had a great team-building experience.”
Shake-A-Leg Miami helps children and adults with physical, developmental and economic challenges by utilizing boats and kayaks. It is one of the largest adaptive water sports facilities in the United States.
“Volunteering at Shake-A-Leg was a great experience” said Tara O’Malley, senior guard. “It is an organization that does wonderful things with kids. Being able to help them was fun.”
