Founded in 1940, the University is sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Order of Sisters from Adrian, Michigan. "U.S. News and World Report 2002 Best Colleges Edition" ranked Barry in the second tier of southern master's colleges and universities.

Barry is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097: Telephone number 404-679-4501) to award bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees.

In 2000-2001, our total enrollment was 8650 (full-time and part-time undergraduate, graduate, adult and continuing education, and professional). Of our total enrollment, 89% are Florida residents, 5% are from out-of-state, and 5% are international. For total enrollment, 34% are male, 66% are female.

Barry enrolled 2680 full-time undergraduates (primarily in our traditional programs). Our part-time undergraduate population totaled 3097 (primarily in our accelerated bachelor's programs designed for working adults). Our full-time graduate students totaled 1249; our part-time graduate students totaled 1624.

Our students were drawn from 49 states and 75 countries. "U.S. News and World Report 2002 Best Colleges Edition" ranked Barry #1 in diversity in southern master's colleges and universities.

The student to faculty ratio is 13:1. This allows for personalized attention, enabling you to more easily reach your goals.

Campus Life CAMPUS LIFE

There is always something to do on campus:

  • over 92 student clubs and organizations
  • over 15 national honor societies
  • sororities and fraternities
  • intramural sports including basketball, soccer, sand volleyball, softball, golf, and tennis
  • wellness activities including salsa, yoga, kickboxing, tai chi, and body sculpting

ATHLETICS

SoccerBarry's twelve NCAA Division II teams (Sunshine State Conference) include men's baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, and tennis, and women's basketball, crew, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Barry has won four national championships -- three in women's soccer and one in volleyball. In addition, Barry has crowned 80 All-Americans and 60 Scholar All-Americans, and has sent numerous teams and individuals to post-season playoffs and national championship competitions.

Barry has also gained acclaim for its emphasis on academics. More than 60% of Barry's athletes earned grade point averages of 3.0 or higher in 1999-2000. 

The Buccaneer athletic program is one of the most competitive in NCAA Division II. In 2000-01, six of the Bucs' 12 teams earned NCAA Tournament bids, led the men's soccer team which finished second in the nation. Women's soccer and women's tennis each earned third-place national finishes, while women's basketball reached the Sweet 16. Men's tennis and volleyball both competed in the regional. The six teams in post-season play matched the Buccaneers best set in 1997-98 and earned Barry it's highest point total (355) in the Sears Director's Cup competition and an 18th-place finish overall.

Barry's Health and Sports Center houses a 1,500-seat gymnasium, modern weight-training facility, state-of-the-art rehabilitation and athletic training facility, a human performance laboratory, and a biomechanics lab. Outdoor facilities include soccer and baseball fields and tennis, racquetball, and basketball courts.

LOCATION

Barry is conveniently located in the Village of Miami Shores, seven miles from the city of Miami and 14 miles from Fort Lauderdale. Our beautiful 122-acre campus is just minutes from the Atlantic beaches. This location provides you with easy access to all the resources of this exciting, international metropolitan area.

FINANCIAL AID

More than 80% of Barry students receive some form of financial assistance. We offer a generous number of scholarships and grants for undergraduates. We also participate in federal and State of Florida financial aid programs. More information on these programs can be obtained through Barry's Office of Financial Aid. Applicants for Barry's graduate programs are encouraged to contact the school offering their program of choice for additional information on scholarships or research assistantships.

To apply for financial assistance, follow these steps:

  • Apply for admission to Barry University.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Graduate applicants will also need to complete the Barry University Supplemental Financial Aid application.

Barry encourages all students to apply early.
The application process is a simple one:

All applicants for admission to Barry's undergraduate programs must submit the following:

  • Completed undergraduate application.
  • A $30.00 U.S. nonrefundable application fee. Please make your check or money order payable to Barry University. (You can also apply online and submit a reduced fee of $20.00.)
  • Official high school and/or college transcripts.
  • SAT I or ACT test scores

Graduate applicants must submit the following:

  • Completed application.
  • A $30.00 U.S. nonrefundable application fee. Please make your check or money order payable to Barry University.
  • GRE, MAT or MCAT scores as required for specific programs.
  • Letters of recommendation as required for specific programs.
  • Essay or statement of purpose.

International Students must also submit:

  • TOEFL scores if your native language is other than English.
  • Educational documents (transcripts, records of marks, school-leaving examinations) accompanied by certified English translations if in a language other than English.
  • An enrollment deposit equivalent to tuition fees for one semester: $8,750 (2000-2001).

Decision letters are mailed out weekly. As soon as we have received all your application materials, the Office of Admission will make a decision on your acceptance and set the wheels in motion to send out your notification!
