About the CAL Program

A Support Program for Post-Secondary Students with Learning Disabilities and/or Attention Deficit Disorders

The program at the Center for Advanced Learning (CAL) exists to support college-age students with learning disabilities and/or attention problems in developing skills and strategies that will help them to function successfully in a post secondary academic setting. A secondary goal is that the Barry University academic experience will provide a positive transition to the work place and the practice of life long learning. This is a fee-for -service program and parents are invited to be involved in the team for support and problem solving along with the student and the CAL administration.

Students attend scheduled and open tutorial hours, seminars, and mentoring sessions. Each student receives at least four hours of scheduled, individualized tutoring per week. During this time students build skills and strategies while working on course content. Students may access additional help on a walk-in basis during open tutorial hours. Computer stations and assistive software are available for all CAL students, especially those with particular reading and writing challenges. The CAL seminars cover active learning topics such as time management, effective test preparation, test anxiety, and study skills. The program provides quiet spaces for students to complete their homework assignments when not engaged in tutorials or classes.
