Center for Advanced Learning Staff

Director: Dr. Phyllis R. Sandals

Dr. Sandals holds an Ed.D. (2002), DipEDCI (1992), and M.Ed.(1986) from the University of Calgary, and a B.Ed. (1981) from the University of Alberta. In her experience with the Calgary Catholic School District, a large urban school district of 44,000 students, she held the positions of Supervisor of Research, Assessment and Grants, Supervisor of Special Education, Reading Specialist, and teacher of elementary and middle school students. She was seconded to the Calgary Learning Center, a research and demonstration agency in learning disabilities, for one year, and was subsequently instrumental in establishing St. Charles School for students with learning disabilities. Dr. Sandals is a past provincial president of the Council for Exceptional Children, and has served on the provincial Special Education Advisory Board of the Alberta Department of Education.

Dr. Phyllis R. Sandals

Assistant to the Director: Ms. Madalay Fleming, B.A.

Ms. Fleming received her B.A. in English literature with a minor in Psychology from Barry University in 2006. Fluent in Spanish and English, she has taught courses at Miami Dade College in ESOL, Intensive English, Citizenship and Workplace Readiness and English Conversation. She has also taught courses in Grammar and Syntax, and English Conversation at Barry University. Ms. Fleming is currently working on a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling and Therapy at Barry University.

Receptionist: Ashley Sweeting

A former Barry student, Ashley serves as receptionist and coordinates many of the CAL activities, including the scheduling and administering of accommodations for tests and examinations. Her organizational skills are used to advantage in supporting the work of CAL students and staff.

Ashley proudly serves in the US Navy Reserves as Master at Arms.
