Allen, Andrea

Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Andrea Allen attended the Universitaet Heidelberg before moving to the United States and subsequently earning a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida. Dr. Allen received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Florida International University and is a licensed therapist in the State of Florida specializing in anxiety and mood disorders. Dr. Allen is currently an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Academic Coordinator for Behavioral Sciences and Social Welfare Service at Barry University in Miami, Florida. Further, she serves as Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the School of Adult and Continuing Education at Barry University in Miami.

Dr. Allen’s research interests focus mainly on childhood anxiety disorders and children’s reactions to trauma. As such, she has been involved in “Project Recovery,” a SAMSHA funded Florida program aimed at helping children cope in the aftermath of the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005. Recently, Dr. Allen has worked with mental health professionals in New Orleans in an effort to address anxiety and post traumatic stress in children after Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Allen serves as a consultant to the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine Disaster and Extreme Event Preparedness Center (DEEP Center) and as such has been engaged in extensive training and development of preparedness and early response programs for disasters and acts of mass violence. Further, as a member of the Terrorism and Disaster Center of the University of Oklahoma’s Health Sciences Center, Dr. Allen collaborates with fellow researchers in the area of childhood responses to trauma.
