All Slaves Should Be Free
In his recently published book, Dr. Edward Sunshine, Associate Professor of Theology, gives us access to the little-known work of two Capuchin monks who, in 17th century Cuba, struggled courageously to end the dehumanizing practice of slavery. A Just Defense of the Natural Freedom of Slaves: All Slaves Should be Free (1682) by Epifanio de Moirans: A Critical Edition and Translation of Servi Liberi seu Naturalis Mancipiorum Libertatis Iusta Defensio was authored by Epifanio de Moirans, a Frenchman from Burgundy. This book did what was most subversive at the time: it condemned the very institution of slavery.
Sunshine’s work provides the Latin text and his English translation in a facing-page format, with critical commentary. The only copy of the original document is located in Seville, Spain, at the Archivo General de Indias (General Archives of the Indies), the official archive for Spanish colonial documents.
This translation opens up a new avenue of inquiry for scholars and those interested in abolitionism, colonialism, and the early history of Cuba. John T. Ford, C.S.C., Catholic University of America, calls it “an enriching exploration of the past, but also a conscientization in the present.”
Intended for reference library usage, it is available for $139.95 through Edwin Mellen Press. Discounts are available.
