Elsie M. Miranda is Assistant Professor of Practical Theology and Director of Ministerial Formation at Barry University , Miami Shores , Florida . Dr. Miranda was born in Miami to Cuban parents and is the eldest of two daughters. Elsie has lived in S. Florida most of her life with the exception of her college years. As an undergrad she attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, where she earned a B.S. in Psychology; as a graduate student she attended Boston College, in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where she earned a master's degree in Pastoral Ministry with a concentration in Religious Education; and as a post-grad she attended Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida where she earned a Doctorate in Practical Theology.
Dr. Miranda has been a part of the Barry University community since 1996, when she was Associate Director of Mission and Ministry. In that capacity she served the University community by promoting the mission of the University and by teaching undergraduates in the School of Arts & Science.
Her academic interests are in the areas of Ethics, Social Justice, Feminist Ethics, Liberation Theology, Queer Theology, Practical Theology, Ministerial Formation and Pastoral Care and Counseling. In addition to serving as Director of Ministerial Formation, Dr. Miranda teaches both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses.
Her service to the community has included presentations at New Ways Ministry National Conference on the issues of Homosexuality and the Catholic Church and at the National Catholic AIDS Network on issues grief, HIV / AIDS education and prevention, as well as various local presentations on issues involving the grief process and social and sexual ethics.
Dr. Miranda's current publishing interests are in the areas of Ministerial Formation; Latino/Hispanic theology and Catholic Social Teaching in regards to HIV/ AIDS care and prevention in conjunction with "The Wall las memorias, " a non-profit, faith-based organization in Los Angeles, California.
