Certificate in Latino/Hispanic Theology & Ministry
A Certificate* is available for graduate students who wish to enhance their skills through obtaining additional practical and academic knowledge regarding Latino/Hispanic Theology and Ministry. The growth of Latino/Hispanic membership in the U.S. Catholic Church (40% of Catholics in the U.S. are Hispanic/Latino) and in Protestant denominations, along with the valued insights of the Hispanic/Latino community, presents a call to understand and speak to the theological and cultural world of the Latino(a).
Barry’s Institute for Hispanic/Latino Theology and Ministry is uniquely poised to give you the background you need to be an active member of this growing dialogue.
Requirements: Requirements for the Certificate may be fulfilled with successful completion of U.S. Hispanic/Latino Theology (THE 630) or Hispanic/Latino Ministry & Practical Theology (THE 633) and four other courses in the area of Latino/Hispanic Theology and Ministry. Taking two courses a Term, you can complete the Certificate in as little as two years. Furthermore, completion of these courses need not take you away from your current ministry.
Courses Offered:
- THE 630 - U.S. Hispanic/Latino Theology* (core course)
- THE 633 - Hispanic/Latino Ministry & Practical Theology * (core course)
- THE 716 - Latino Popular Religiosity and its Ethics of Solidarity
- THE 717 - Feminista/Mujerista Theology
- THE 718 - Liturgy and Preaching in Latino Congregations
- THE 720 - Christian Spirituality and the United States Hispanic/Latino Context
Summer and Winter Terms: Courses are offered through a Summer and Winter Term format. The courses begin with a six-week pre-residency period. During this time period you will complete readings and pre-residency requirements. The pre-residency period is followed by a two-week, on-campus residency. Classes are held Monday through Friday for three hours during this two-week period. A six-week post-residency period allows you to complete major course assignments, generally a research project/paper. If you are from out-of-state, live in another area of Florida, or have responsibilities that preclude study throughout the academic year, this structure is ideal. Housing is available for the both the January (Winter) and June (Summer) terms.
* Please note: You can also incorporate these courses into a Doctor of Ministry or a Master of Arts in Practical Theology degree program. |
