Admission Requirements
Because we recognize there are many factors that determine a person’s potential for success, the School of Business uses a portfolio approach to make a decision regarding your admission. The Admissions Committee will consider your accomplishments, potential, and goals when evaluating your potential for success in graduate business studies. Admission Portfolio credentials include:
GMAT Score. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is strongly encouraged for all applicants. To enable a thorough consideration of your potential, the Admissions Committee requires a GMAT score* in the following circumstances:
You do not have
substantial
business or management experience that included responsibility for performance of subordinates and a budget.
You intend to apply for a scholarship or grant through the School of Business.
Transcripts. Official college and/or university transcript indicating your receipt of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university or a listed international institution and your cumulative undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA). Your transcript should indicate either a major in accounting or an equivalency in accounting.
Recommendations. Two letters of recommendation that speak to your potential for successful study at the graduate level and address your potential for success in business.
Statement of Purpose. A statement of your purpose for pursuing graduate study which must include the reasons why you expect to become successful in business. This Statement must include verifiable evidence of your business or management experience, preferably in a position of significant or increasing responsibility. These responsibilities should be described in detail. Be sure to indicate references who can verify your experience. Your statement should explain any weaknesses in other credentials, such as a cumulative undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0, or a GMAT score less than 500.
The Statement of Purpose is particularly important if: a) you have not taken the GMAT or have attained a score below 500, or b) you lack business or management experience at the level indicated above.
Resume. Please also include your resume if you have substantial professional business experience.
Admission Interview. The Admissions Committee may require an interview in cases where the overall impression created by your credentials does not present a persuasive case for admission. This would give you an opportunity to further explain reasons for weakness, accomplishments, and the reasons for your expectation of success in the program.
Sufficient Undergraduate Preparation. Adequate undergraduate preparation in the required disciplines is noted below:
Accounting major (or achieve equivalency in accounting)
Finance (three credits with a grade of C or better)
Economics (six credits with a grade of C or better)
College algebra (three credits with a grade of C or better)
Probability and statistics (three credits with a grade of C or better)
Management (three credits each, with a grade of C or better)
Operations (three credits each, with a grade of C or better)
Marketing (three credits each, with a grade of C or better)
If you lack sufficient preparation in any of these disciplines, you may still be admitted, but you will be required to successfully complete a non-credit workshop in each discipline where you lack preparation. Each required workshop must be completed before you can take a 600-level course in that discipline.
These workshops have been developed to give you the background you need to succeed in your graduate courses.
Writing skills. You must demonstrate adequate writing skills. If your skills are not adequate, you will be required to complete successfully a writing skills workshop before or during the first calendar year of your graduate study. This will better enable you to complete graduate research paper requirements, and to succeed in business.
