Sanibel Island
Beautiful Sanibel Island And The Southwest Florida Gulf Coast

Follow in the footsteps of Ponce de Leon who in 1513 Discovered the southwest coast of Florida including beautiful Sanibel Island. Originally named "Costa de Caracoles" or Coast of Sea Shells, Sanibel is renowned for its lighthouse, lush vegetation, extensive beaches, abundant bird life, casual lifestyle and, most of all, for the thousands of sea shells brought to its fine sand beaches by each tide. Get to know Sanibel and other aspects of this wondrous part of Florida through field trips, academic sessions, and historic dramatizations. Reside on Sanibel in a gulf-front inn. Accommodations have private bath, A/C, pool, butterfly garden, and beach. Meals at inn, catered, and in area restaurants. Come to Sanibel's beautiful white sand beaches and gain first hand understanding of sea shells and the "Sanibel Stoop" (the shelling posture) during interpreted beach walks. Learn about shells from around the world while visiting one of the world's most renowned shell museums. Observe the area's birds and vegetation at a national wildlife refuge. Gain information about rescue and rehab of injured wildlife on the island at a wildlife rehab center. Learn about the marine life that inhabits island waters. Investigate Sanibel's history through discussion and field trips. Spend a day at the nearby winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford examining the lives of these two remarkable men.
