This 13 day program invites you to linger a while in South Florida and savor its diverse pleasures. Experience the area's historic culture, foods, resources, and people.
Your journey begins with five nights in an oceanfront hotel on Sunny Isle Beach and includes a day trip to Miami’s own Fairchild Gardens where you will experience nature like never before. On day 6, travel by coach to Key Largo for a relaxing, fun-filled, informative Keys weekend. Then head out to magical Key West via the scenic overseas highway for the remaining five nights. Comfortable accommodations are ideally located and include private bath, A/C, and pools. If driving to Miami, park free on the Barry University Miami campus throughout the program.
Itinerary: Miami, 5 nights; motor coach to Key Largo, 2 nights; motor coach to Key West, 5 nights, motor coach return to Miami. Independent flights from Miami after 4 PM. Transportation between sites/porterage included.

Each day of this extended program will reveal different facets of this gem-like part of the world. Experience the sophisticated beauty of South Beach. Discover how art deco and other influences have given the area its own distinctive style. Enjoy the subtropical climate and lush vegetation as you recall Miami's past and explore its historic neighborhoods. Learn about regional literature, art, and architecture. During the weekend in Key Largo, study the marine world on a glass-bottom boat ride and learn from experts at a dolphin research center. In Key West, you will delve beyond the facade into the secret charms of this intriguing place. Meet local residents who came down "just for the weekend" years ago and never left! Examine the quaint architecture, learn about the area's colorful history, and discover why so many famous writers call this place home. Investigate important issues about the coral reef and surrounding waters. Walk in the footsteps of presidents, drop into the saloon made famous by Hemingway, and join the Key West ritual of celebrating the sunset. The program features dynamic lecturers, fascinating field trips, and unforgettable learning.

This is a 13 day program. Upon arrival at the hotel, you can pick up your key at the front desk. Register with the Elderhostel staff in the lobby from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The program begins on Sunday at the Newport Beachside Hotel and Resort on Sunday and ends on Friday upon returning from Key West. South Florida is a sub tropical and comfortably warm. Bring casual, light-weight clothing, good walking shoes, a light long-sleeved shirt, a hat, sunglasses, camera,

Casual clothes and good walking shoes are the order of the day. A camera, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hats are suggested. Don't forget a bathing suit for a dip in the pool or ocean after classes. A sweater or jacket may be needed at night or in the air conditioning.
