The Secret Life of the Everglades

Flamingo "There are no other Everglades in the world." These words of Marjory Stoneman Douglas offer insight into the nature of this magical hidden place. Study its seasons, vistas, and wildlife. Discover how it has been drained, burned, paved, and assaulted. Understand why finally it is being recognized not as a swamp, but as a slow river anchoring a moderate subtropical climate. The Everglades has spawned many tales, aroused environmental, political, and economic interest and animated a vivid history, art, and literature. Appreciate its subtle beauty and awesome mysteries through memorable field trips. Learn about its endangered species, fervent champions, and its people. Come away with a new respect for its complex relationships. Some walking.

The Everglades, the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the continental U.S., is a place of mystery and lore. Venture into this fragile ecosystem through study and fascinating field trips. Observe mammals, birds, fish and reptiles in their unique habitat. Learn about the ecological issues imperiling them. Examine the complex relationship of sunlight, heat, wind, and water. Brought to you in partnership with Barry University.
