Softball Pounds Out Series-Opening Win Over Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pounded out a 6-1 win over the Nova Southeastern in Sunshine State Conference softball action at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.

The Bucs (17-10, 5-2 SSC) put up single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and added three more in the sixth, to propel Alexis Yohe (8-5) to the win. Yohe went the distance, holding the Sharks (13-16, 2-8 SSC) to a run on four hits. She walked one and struck out six.

Barry got on the board in the first inning. Natalia Ojeda led off with a double and scored one out later on a double by Sarah Broeseker.

In the top of the third, the Sharks pulled even as Lorena Spaulding bunted her way on with one out. One out later, Samira Tanaka singled to right to drive in the run.

The Bucs responded in the bottom of the frame. Broeseker doubled with one out and scored on a ground out by Britney Pugh.

In the fourth, the Bucs plated an insurance run. Kristina Pazienza led off with a single. Two bunts moved her to third and Ojeda delivered an RBI single for the run.

Barry broke the game open in the sixth, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring three runs. Pazienza led off with a double and went to third on a bunt. She scored on a wild pitch as Ojeda walked. Megan Copeland reached on a bunt single and Broeseker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Julie Brito drove in two runs with an infield single.

Jennie Van Doellen (11-11) was saddled with the loss. She allowed six runs on 11 this and four walks in six innings.
