MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University’s baseball team dropped a non-conference matchup against Ave Maria University Wednesday night at Feinbloom field, 10-7.

Barry (21-14) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead on a pair of wild pitches after back-to-back singles from Luis Arrizurieta and Adrian English and a stolen base that advance both runners into scoring position.

Ave Maria (27-15) evened the game at two with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the third off lefty Joeanthony Rivera. However Rivera did finish with two strikeouts in two innings of work and left prior to the fifth with the Bucs leading 4-3.

Head coach Marc Pavao was able to get a variety of pitchers plenty of work in the non-conference game as Barry used six pitchers in all.

Starter Frank Szczepanik and reliever Adrian Benitez each tossed two scoreless innings. Szczepanik finished with two K’s and Benitez fanned three.

Every hitter in the lineup collected at least one hit and four Bucs finished with two-hit games. The Buccaneers’ first three hitters, Sheehan Planas-Arteaga, Arrizurieta and English each belted three hits and freshman Zac Burger also added a pair of hits to pace the offense.

The Bucs took a 7-4 lead in the seventh with a three-run rally highlighted by Planas’ two-RBI double down the left field line.

Unfortunately Barry was not able to hold on to the three run lead as the Gyrenes put together a six run eighth to finish the comeback.

Barry returns to conference action this weekend with a three-game series in Winter Park, Fla. starting Friday against Rollins College.
