Chelsea Baker (left) and Leslie Redmond were awarded the 2013 St. Catherine Medals.

On Friday, May 3, Barry University held its annual Honors Convocation to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of the university’s students. More than 150 people were in attendance for the event which distinguished students from eight of Barry’s schools and colleges.

Barry’s most distinguished award, the St. Catherine Medal, was awarded to two students this year. Chelsea Baker, a senior social work major, earned the award in the senior category; while Leslie Redmond, a junior political science, earned the award in the sophomore/junior category.

Kappa Gamma Pi National Catholic College Honor Society awards the St Catherine Medal each year to a pair of Barry student who have demonstrated outstanding service and leadership.

Baker earned the award for her involvement in numerous philanthropic organizations including the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church and the Immokalee Farmworkers Coalition. On campus, Baker volunteered with the Alternative Spring Break Program, created Barry’s Praise and Worship Group, and was the co-founder of Barry’s Students for Justice. She is the Vice President of Barry’s Student Social Work Association, a member of the philosophy club, and Phi Gamma Mu Honor Society.

In three years at Barry, Redmond has volunteered with numerous philanthropic societies including organizing the “Get Out and Vote” campaign on Barry’s campus. She is a resident assistant, and the vice president of Barry’s Phi Alpha Delta professional organization. She was elected as the 2013-14 Student Government Association President and will begin her term in August 2013. Redmond is a member of four academic honor societies: Phi Eta Sigma, Sigma Tau Delta, Delta Epsilon Iota, and Phi Sigma Alpha.

In addition to the St. Catherine Medal, the dean of each school/college, located on the Miami Shores campus, awarded their unit’s Dean’s Award to one or two students. The winners of Barry’s Deans’ Awards were selected because of their academic commitment and their representation of their school/college.
