Barry women's golf team signed Paloma Vega to play for the Buccaneers beginning in the fall.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University women’s golf coach Shannon Sykora announced the signing of Paloma Vega Gonzalez-Ruiz.

Vega, an incoming freshman from Madrid, Spain, played for The Gunnery High School’s varsity coed team in Washington, Conn. She carried a 41.3 scoring average in nine-hole events, which is the norm in high school events. Her 18-hole average – the norm in NCAA competition – equated to 76.5.

“Paloma is a great athlete who established herself as the best female golfer on her high school team,” Sykora said. “She has experience at an esteemed prep school.”

Vega was the top female finisher at the Kingswood Invitational at Oak Ridge Golf Course last season. She was second at the Pippy O’Connor Tournament at Watertown Country Club. She consistently shot within one or two strokes of par throughout the season. She played from the men’s tees in select tournaments.

“She’s already adapted to life in the United States so her transition into college golf will be easier for her,” Sykora said. “We are very excited to add her to our program.”
