SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Barry University opened the season with a pair of wins at the Ram Rumble hosted by Shepherd University Friday.

The Buccaneers beat Shepherd, 25-17, 25-23, 30-28, in the first match of the season. Barry (2-0) went on to sweep Bowie State Friday afternoon, winning easily, 25-7, 25-8, 25-8.

Freshman Eva Raat had 10 kills, three aces and hit .348 in the win over the Rams. Senior Ashley Carrero had nine kills, and sophomore Laine Cielena had nine kills, three blocks and 10 digs. 

Barry hit .214 as a team, putting away 39 balls in 112 attempts. Shepherd hit .061, committing 21 errors to the Bucs' 15. 

Freshman Kristen Reid had 11 digs, and sophomore Jasmine Serna added 20 assists and nine digs for Barry. None of the Rams recorded double-digit kills. Meg Kenny had seven, while hitting .312. Shepherd's Lauren Summa had 17 digs, and Katie Beecher was credited with four blocks.

Against the Bulldogs, Barry had a .441 attack percentage, anchored by junior Jayla Trombley's seven kills on 10 swings with one error for a .600 hitting rate. Cielena had seven kills, hit .538 and had a block assist. 

The Bucs held the Bulldogs to one kill in the match. Bowie State was tagged with 17 hitting errors in 47 swings, while Barry had five errors in 59 attempts.

Freshman Ivana Didanovic had five kills, hit .444 and totalled two blocks. Freshman Jenny Trinidad had 28 assists and five of her team's 13 aces while getting credited with a block. 

The Bucs play Pace at 9 a.m. Saturday and Lock Haven at 3:30 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
