MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's rowing crew opens the season Saturday at Shane Watersports Center in Miami Beach at the Mix of Miami races.

The Buccaneers, which finished as the NCAA Division II runner-up in June, will race against Nova Southeastern at the intracoastal waterway in Miami Beach. First race begins at 8 a.m.

Shane Watersports Center is located at 6500 Indian Creek Dr. in Miami Beach.

"We're anxious to race," new head coach Boban Rankovic said. "It's the start of a new season. We're doing what we can to make ourselves the best."

The University of Miami was supposed to race in the annual event, but the Hurricanes, under former Barry University coach Dave Sanderson, pulled out.

Barry, which has its largest team in program history with 34 rowers to begin the fall season, will also race in the Head of the Charles in Boston Oct. 19, the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 2 and the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Fall Championships Nov. 9.

Saturday's race against the defending NCAA champs, will follow the head start format. Varsity 4 and Varsity 8 crews will each row in the Mix of Miami, hosted this year by Nova Southeastern.
