DADE CITY, Fla. -- Barry University women's golf team tied for third at the Saint Leo Invitational at Lake Jovita Golf Club.
The Buccaneers shared the third spot with Florida Tech at 608 in the two-round tournament on the par-72, 6,132-yard course that featured 18 teams and 96 players. Lynn and Flagler were forced into a playoff after both shot 603 in the 36 holes. Lynn won the playoff.
"We would have liked to have been in the playoff," Barry coach Shannon Sykora said. "It's a learning experience. We're getting better, so that's the main thing."
Barry sophomore Nancy Vergara tied for third with Florida Southern's Emily Rymer after they both shot 4-over 148. Vergara had a 75 Tuesday. Lynn's Jessica Bradley won the tournament by a stroke over Flagler's Marie Santacroce after shooting 144. Bucs sophomore Nicky Ferre shot 77 in the final round, tying for fifth with Flagler's Stephanie Tucker at 5-over 149.
"Nancy played well, and so did Nicky," Sykora said. "They held it together."
Barry sophomore Maria Paola Fiorio shot 72-81 -- 153 to tie for 15th with five others. Bucs freshman Martina Bertuccioli finished in a five-way tie for 31st after shooting back-to-back 79s. Junior Francesca Perini shot 82 in the final round, finishing in a three-way tie for 46th at 162.
The Sunshine State Conference Championships and South Regional will be played on the same course, marking the second straight year Barry will have played the same course three times in a season.
Barry finishes play in the fall season next Monday and Tuesday at the Flagler Women's Invitational at Moss Creek Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla.
