Members of Barry’s Greek community recently took part in the university’s annual Greek Leadership Weekend which wrapped up on Sunday, Oct. 20. Held annually each fall, Greek Leadership Weekend provides unique types of leadership development workshops designed specifically members of Barry’s fraternities and sororities.
The events began on Friday, Oct. 18 when fraternities and sororities gathered for chapter photos. The organizations assembled as a community for social activities including music, games, and a t-shirt design contest.
Saturday’s program opened with a discussion, facilitated by Sr. Adela Langa, about Barry’s Mission & Core Commitments intersect with each organization’s individual missions, creeds, and values. This was followed by sessions that discussed student conduct and advocacy, alcohol awareness and hazing prevention, time management, transformational leadership, and other subjects related to fraternity & sorority life. The sessions were facilitated by staff and graduate assistants from various departments including the Center for Student Involvement, Career Services, Alumni Relations, and the Center for Community Service Initiatives.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday when more than 30 fraternity and sorority members gathered to clean local streets as part of the Adopt A Highway program. The Barry volunteers cleaned trash and debris along NW 7th Avenue between 119th Street and NW 151st Street. The students worked from 9 a.m. to noon, cleaning trash off of the ground along the sidewalks and grass of the highway.
