MIAMI, Fla.-- Barry University associate professor of political science Sean Foreman, PhD, was recently has given the Graham-Frey Civic Award for 2014 from Florida Campus Compact at a ceremony. Foreman accepted the award from Dr. Edward Meadows, president of Pensacola State College, at the Florida Campus Compact Awards Gala hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on October 15.
Named in honor of former Florida Governor and United States Senator Bob Graham and U.S. Congressman Lou Frey, the award recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of civic learning and engagement in sustaining our participatory democracy.
A faculty member at Barry since 2005, Foreman has been involved in numerous civic engagement activities as a professor, student club advisor, forum moderator, political analyst, and author. In the classroom, he applies innovative approaches such as model Congress simulations and student debates to stimulate critical thinking and collaborative learning. Since 2007, he has helped prepare students for an annual trip to the state capitol to advocate policies in the interest of Florida students and universities.
Foreman co-chairs the organizing committee for BarryUniversity’s Campus Democracy Project, which promotes civic learning and democratic engagement. He is an organizer of campus events to mark U.S. Constitution Day each year.
A former president and current board member of the Florida Political Science Association, Foreman also serves on the Florida Advisory Committee of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. He is the education committee chair for the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.
The books he has co-edited include “The Roads to Congress 2010,” “The Roads to Congress 2012,” and “Local Government and Mayoral Elections in 21st Century America: The Keys to City Hall.”
Florida Campus Compact is part of a national presidential membership organization that advances the civic purposes of colleges and universities by deepening their ability to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility.
