ACE students lend a helping hand to families of ill children

Barry instructor Millicent Kelly and several ACE students help out at Quantum House Jan. 27.

Students from ACE’s Palm Beach Gardens site recently got a lesson that extended beyond the classroom while extending a helping hand at the same time. On Jan. 27, Millicent Kelly, a Barry instructor and regional director of ACE’s Palm Beach Treasure Coast sites, took her students to participate in the Chef for a Day activity at the Quantum House located on the campus of St. Mary’s Medical Facility in West Palm Beach. The Quantum House is an independent facility which provides housing for families who have chronically or critically ill children that are receiving treatment at the hospital.

The students cooked an entire meal for the families residing at the house, but didn’t stop there. They consoled worried parents, washed dishes, vacuumed, mopped floors and cleaned windows. Some of the students were Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and entertained the children temporarily residing at the house with an overview of police work. The students will reflect upon this service learning activity by submitting a detailed report on their experiences.

On Jan. 30, the group demonstrated their commitment to service learning once again when they participated in the Komen South Florida Affiliate Race/Walk for the Cure.
