Public Safety offers holiday safety tips

Public Safety offers the Barry community holiday safety tips during November

Driving Safety Tips:
 • Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device.
• Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area.
• Ask mall security for an escort before leaving your shopping location.
• Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car.
• Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked.

Shopping Safety Tips:
• Dress casually and comfortably.
• Keep cash in your pocket avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
• Beware of strangers approaching for any reason. At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
• Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
• Always carry your identification card or driver license along with necessary cash, checks and/or credit card you expect to use.

Robbery Prevention Tips:
• Avoid taking short cuts through isolated areas.
• When fleeing from danger, alert others by yelling “Fire.. Fire..!”
• The buddy system works best, as you are less likely to be targeted. If something does happen, you have a better chance of getting help.
• Plan ahead so if you must walk alone, choose open, well-lit and well traveled areas.
• Be aware of your surroundings.

What to do during an armed-robbery:
• Stay calm. Do not make any sudden movements to upset the robber.
• Do exactly what you are told. DO NOT RESIST!
• Give the robber time to leave.
• Note the direction of travel when he/she leaves.
• Try to get a description of vehicle and direction of travel ONLY if you can do so without exposing yourself to harm.
• Don’t be a hero. It’s better to lose your money than your life.

Strangers at your door:
• Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts.
• Donate to recognized charitable organizations.

Hosting a party:
• Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests.
• Find alternative transportation for intoxicated guests.

Attending a party:
• Have something to eat before consuming alcoholic beverages.
• Remember only time will eliminate alcohol from your body.
• Know your safe limit.

At home:
• Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes.
• Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.
• When setting up a Christmas tree or other holiday display, make sure doors and passages are clear inside of the home.
• Be sure your Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base so children, elderly persons or family pets cannot pull it over on themselves.
