The Community Learning Partnership of Greater Miami Shores is kicking off the school year with conversations about citizenship.

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Community Learning Partnership brought together local schools and organizations to encourage discussions and different perspectives about citizenship at its event “Fostering Global Citizenship” at Barry University
.

Students from Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School, Doctors Charter School, Miami Country Day School and The Cushman School were invited to enjoy an ice cream social and participate in citizenship-driven discussions and interactive activities organized by Barry University students.
Other Community Learning Partners in attendance included Community Television of South Florida and the Greater Miami Shores Chamber Educational Task Force.

During the event, held in the Kostka Room at Thompson Hall, Dr. Sean Foreman, assistant professor of political science at Barry University, spoke to students about various citizenship topics, such as how to become a more educated and involved citizen.

The discussions and exercises centered on citizenship were organized by the Community Learning Partnership in preparation for its event at Barry University on Dec. 2 featuring former Florida governor and United States senator Bob Graham.

The Community Learning Partnership of Greater Miami Shores was formed in 2008 by leaders of local businesses, organizations and educational institutions, both public and private, to serve as a catalyst for community engagement. The grass roots effort encourages local schools and community leaders to work together on important educational topics and events.

As a reflection of its mission and its core commitment to an “inclusive community,” Barry University joined the partnership in 2008 in an effort to cultivate relationships with the local community.
