The Career Corner
Finding your dream job doesn’t have to be a dream. The economic recession may make you believe so, but with the right tools, preparations, and confidence, finding and scoring your ideal career is certainly possible. If you are on the lookout for new job or internship opportunities, Career Services has many upcoming events to help you on your quest this spring.
According to Career Service’s Director, Dr. Amy Diepenbrock, the economic recession has hit the job market hard over the past six months and it is more critical than ever that students purposefully prepare themselves early in order to be a competitive candidate in their chosen field.
“The average job search takes roughly four months in a thriving economy, so it’s important to start your job search well before graduation,” said Dr. Diepenbrock. “Take advantage of every networking opportunity, including our upcoming industry specific career fairs. Make an appointment to meet with your career liaison. Be sure to get involved in leadership activities and do at least one internship. All of these steps will help you achieve your goals.”
To help students prepare for upcoming career options, Career Services is pleased to host “Opportunity is Knocking,” Barry’s second annual series of industry specific career fairs featuring employers seeking students for jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities from a vast array of industries. Spring Career Fair Week starts Monday, March 16th with three days of industry specific fairs, such as Nursing and Health Sciences, Social Services, Non-Profit, Government, Education, Business, and Sports Management. The week’s events end on Thursday, March 19th with a day full of discussion panels and informational sessions to help students prepare for interviews, sharpen resumes, and learn what types of opportunities are available to those who may want to take an unconventional career route (complete list of Career Services’ spring 2009 events below).
Students are not required to register for the career fairs, but professional attire is recommended. But what if you don’t have the appropriate apparel? Well then stop by Landon Atrium on Monday, March 11th through Wednesday, March 13th and “Suit Yourself!” The second annual clothing sale sponsored by Delta Epsilon Iota Honor Society is back – and here to help students find that great professional suit, pair of fabulous heels, or the perfect necktie to complete your interview ensemble – all for super cheap! The sale will feature gently-used inexpensive professional attire for men and women. All items are $10 or less and go quickly, so make sure to stop by early to get the first pick.
If the thought of networking or internship searching still has you confused, have no fear! Career Services’ knowledgeable and friendly staff is here to serve all students and alumni on their journey through college and beyond. The office features three highly-skilled career liaisons that are trained to help students navigate their path to graduate school or industry specific careers. The staff can also assist students by conducting mock job interviews, resume critiques, and provide academic and career assessments for those who are interested in discovering their special talents and abilities. After you feel confident enough seek that dream job, log-in to eBUC$, or Barry’s Electronic Career System. eBUC$ provides an online system for Barry students and alumni to find full and part-time job opportunities, internships, search for employer contact information, post resumes for employers to view, and access a document library with Career Services’ hand-outs and resources. Use eBUC$ as your portal to additional online resources, including links to other Career websites, such as Internships.com.
In addition to these events and opportunities, Career Services will publish its first edition of the much anticipated newsletter, “The Sweet Trade.” The quarterly publication will feature up-to-date information on the center’s events, services, and programs.
