Rising Star Award Recipients

In August 2012, Adam McGinnis, JD ’05 was the first alumnus of Barry University’s Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law to be elected as a judge. He defeated a sitting judge with more than a decade on the bench to become the Orange County Judge for the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida.

Judge McGinnis graduated from Barry University School of Law in 2005. He then studied law at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom with the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Judge McGinnis was a Florida Supreme Court Certified County Mediator and volunteered in numerous mediations. He is an adjunct professor at Valencia College, teaching business law.

At Barry, Judge McGinnis was elected to the Student Senate for 2004-2005. He earned the Book Award for immigration law. As a board member of the Hispanic American Law Association, he won the Board Member of the Year award for 2004-2005. He was also a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.

Judge McGinnis started Adam K. McGinnis PL in 2005, which concentrated on traffic and criminal defense. In 2008, he purchased and merged with Traffic Ticket Attorneys, an Orlando law firm. He has represented thousands of clients throughout the state of Florida. Judge McGinnis is a member in good standing with the Florida Bar, the Orange County Bar, and the Central Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

He graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and is a member of the UCF Alumni Association. Judge McGinnis is a member of the West Orlando Rotary Club and the Tiger Bay Club of Central Florida. He has been married for seven years to his wife, Katy, who is an attorney in the Orange County Public Defenders Office.
