Distinguished Alumnus Faculty/Staff
Mario Cala, DPM ’08
Assistant Professor of Podiatric Medicine
Chief of Podiatry, Jackson North Medical Center
Mario Cala first began his career in health care as dental surgeon in Cuba in 1996. Upon his arrival in Miami in 2003, he worked as an ambulance driver and then as a maintenance employee at a local hospital. After only eight months in the United States, he turned his attention towards a new career and enrolled in Barry’s School of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Cala faced many challenges, including a significant language barrier and departure from a field he loved in favor of unexplored territory.
Despite these obstacles, he flourished in his new profession and successfully graduated from the Podiatric Medicine program in 2008. Dr. Cala has since made a great effort to serve those in need, travelling to Mexico seven times as part of the Yucatan Crippled Children's Project, and responding to the 2010 earthquake by performing surgery on patients with traumatic injuries in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He is also the founding Medical Director for Podiatry Overseas, an organization that enables podiatrists to provide medical care in Togo, Africa twice per year.
