The Saint

Patrick was born in Scotland around 385 CE from Roman parents.  As a boy, he was taken to Ireland as a slave to be a shepherd.  He learned the language and practices of the people.  He escaped at the age of twenty aided by God in a dream.  He entered the priesthood.  When Patrick became bishop, he was sent to Ireland to bring the Gospel.  He preached for forty years all over Ireland, and many converted to the Christian faith.  He died March 17, 461.

Why a shamrock?

Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that time.
