What is the Distinguished Alumni Award?

The Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) is presented to select Barry University alumni who, through their daily lives, professions and community activities, consistently demonstrate and exemplify the Barry Core Commitments of:

  • Knowledge and Truth
    Barry promotes and supports the intellectual life, emphasizing lifelong learning, growth, and development. The University pursues scholarly and critical analysis of fundamental questions of the human experience. In the pursuit of truth, the University advances development of solutions that promote the common good and a more humane and just society.
  • Inclusive Community
    Barry is a global, inclusive community characterized by interdependence, dignity, equality, compassion, and respect for self and others. Embracing a global world view, the University nurtures and values cultural, social and intellectual diversity, and welcomes faculty, staff, and students of all faith traditions.
  • Social Justice
    Barry expects all members of our community to accept social responsibility to foster peace and nonviolence, to strive for equality, to recognize the sacredness of Earth, and to engage in meaningful efforts toward social change. The University promotes social justice through teaching, research, and service.
  • Collaborative Service
    Barry is committed to serving local and global communities through collaboration and mutually-productive partnerships. The University accepts responsibility to engage with communities to pursue systemic, self-sustaining solutions to human, social, economic, and environmental problems.

What are the nomination categories?

One award recipient will be selected for each of the four Barry University Core Commitments as described above. Please note that a nominee may be nominated in only one category.

What is the criteria for nominating and selecting winners?

As you get ready to nominate someone for the Distinguished Alumni Award, please consider the following criteria/eligibility requirements:

Nominee must be a conferred graduate of Barry University. Nominee must exhibit Barry’s Core Commitments in his/her daily life and work Nominee should have an outstanding and notable record of distinction, success, accomplishment, leadership and service in his/her profession and/or community. Special/additional consideration will be given to those alumni who demonstrate an affinity to their alma mater via a record of service to the University and/or the Alumni Association. Previous DAA/Rising Star winners may not be nominated again.

The selection committee will also consider the same criteria when review the nominations.

How are nominations reviewed/selected?

All nominations go through an extensive review process by the Barry University DAA Committee, consisting of members of the Alumni Board of Directors and Barry University faculty and staff members.

Can I nominate more than one person?

Yes, you may nominate as many alumni that you think would meet the eligibility requirements/criteria. However, a nominee may be nominated in only one category as indicated above. Also, please note that multiple nominations must be submitted separately.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes, self-submissions are accepted.

How will I know if my nominee has been selected?

If a nominee is selected as a finalist, the nominator and the nominee will be notified by mail, email and by telephone.

Is the Distinguished Alumni Award only given to four recipients each year?

At the committee’s discretion, in those years where we receive an exceptional pool of nominees, the selection committee may choose to present additional awards as follows:

To honor a current Barry University employee (faculty or staff member) who is an alumnus/alumna, and who demonstrates the Core Commitments to the community at large; and/or

To honor a Rising Star, an alumnus/ alumna who is under 35 years of age and becoming more active in his/her community/career while consistently demonstrating the Core Commitments.

How do I submit a nomination?

All nominations must be electronically submitted by the specified deadline. Only applications submitted electronically via the Barry University DAA nomination webpage will be accepted. Nominations submitted via email, postal mail or hand delivered are not eligible.
