Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

Mimi Watson Sutherland, RN, was the Neurosurgical Coordinator at Jackson Health System and a faculty member in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for more than 30 years. Her experience with neurological injuries caused by gun violence, particularly to children, led her to become an advocate for gun safety. In 2000, Sutherland founded the GATE Program for Juvenile Weapons Offenders at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The program has counseled hundreds of juvenile offenders referred by the juvenile courts in an intensive and structured effort to steer them away from peer pressure and other adverse sociological influences. She is a founding member of the Canadian Association of Neurological Nurses and the American Association of Neurosurgical Nurses and held memberships and offices in more than 60 nursing, medical, and public health organizations.
In 1994, Sutherland graduated with an undergraduate degree in nursing and a graduate degree in Health Services Administration in 1996.
