It is always difficult to lose a loved one. In May, the Barry University community mourned the loss of our alumnus, scholar-athlete and friend, Bill Reifsnider, ’90. He was one of our best - a kind man with a quick, genuine smile and a caring heart. We miss him.
Bill was an acomplished athlete and a gifted scholar. He was a 4-year starter for the Buccaneers baseball team, named a GTE Academic All-American and won the Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Award in 1990. In addition, Bill was Barry’s first Rhodes Scholar candidate. That same year he led the nation in double hits. Bill topped off an outstanding career at Barry University with a batting average of .359, a standout in Barry’s history.
In 1996, Barry Universiy recognized Bill’s accomplishments by inducting him into the Barry University Athletic Wall of Honor. After graduating, Bill took his desire to teach and coach baseball to Czechoslovakia where his talents enriched the lives of children in a nation giving birth to a more democratic society.
To keep alive the vision of one of Barry’s most accomplished and giving alumni, Barry University has established a named scholarship in Bill’s honor for baseball scholar-athletes. The Reifsnider family and friends of Bill have donated more than $17,000.00. On Saturday, January 12, 2013 we invite you to a special Mass in memory of Bill at 4:00 pm in Cor Jesu Chapel on the main campus in Miami Shores. We will follow with a cook out and alumni baseball game at 6:00 pm on the baseball field. Please join us with your family.
