As part of the Physical Sciences Seminar Series, the Department of Physical Sciences invites the Barry community to a lecture by Dr. Frantisek Svec entitled “New trends in the preparation and use of monoliths.”

About the speaker:

Dr. Frantisek Svec is a staff scientist and Facility Director of the Organic and Macromolecular Synthesis Facility at the Molecular Foundry User Facility at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.

Svec received both a B.S. in chemistry and Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague (Czech Republic). He has taught at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, and Cornell University. Since 1997, Svec has been with the University of California, Berkeley. Svec has authored over 410 scientific publications, edited two books, and authored 75 patents.

 

He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Separation Science and member of editorial boards of a number of renowned journals. In 2003 he was elected President of CASSS (formerly California Separation Science Society).  For his pioneering work with monoliths, he received numerous awards and distinctions. F. Svec is best known for his research in the area of macroporous polymers in different shapes such as beads, flat sheets, and, in particular, monoliths and their use in applications including liquid chromatography, electrochromatography, supports for solid phase chemistry, enzyme immobilization, and microfluidics.
