SISTER DOROTHY JEHLE, OP, PhD
Faculty Emerita

With sadness, I share the news that our beloved, Sister Dorothy Jehle, formerly known as Sister Norbert Mary Jehle, died this morning, April 18, at the Dominican Life Center at our Motherhouse in Adrian, Michigan. Sister Dorothy was 96 years of age and in the 71st year of her religious profession as a Dominican sister.

Sister Dorothy came to Barry in 1971. In 1973 Sister Dorothy completed her dissertation and earned a PhD in English from Loyola University in Chicago. Until her retirement in 1991, Sister Dorothy ministered at Barry as a full-time faculty member and from 1975-1988 she served as chairperson of the Department of English and Foreign Languages. During her tenure at Barry Sister Dorothy was President of the Florida College English Association and President of the Florida Association of Departments of English, As a faculty member, Sister Dorothy frequently presented papers on Medieval and Modern English Literature at regional and national conferences. Sister Dorothy also contributed to the life of the University as an officer and committee chair within the Faculty Senate.

Following retirement from full-time teaching in 1991, Sister Dorothy was the Director of the University Archives and Historical Collections until 2011 when she re-located to Adrian.

My Adrian Dominican sisters and I are deeply grateful for Sister Dorothy’s 40 years of ministry at Barry College/University and for the many ways that she enriched the lives of students and faculty with her scholarship and teaching.

Rest in peace, dear Sister. May you enjoy the reward of eternal bliss.
