Scholarship Opportunities:
Sr. Dorothy Browne Legacy Scholarship

Thank you for your interest in the Barry University Alumni Scholarships. The deadline for students to apply for scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year has passed. Please check back in the fall for the 2009-10 scholarship application.

For additional information regarding the alumni scholarships, please contact Patti O’Brien at (pobrien@mail.barry.edu).

Purpose of Scholarship:

The Sr. Dorothy Browne Legacy Scholarship was established (1976) by the Alumni Association in the name of Sr. Dorothy Browne who served as President of Barry University from 1963-1974.

This scholarship is awarded to qualified applicants regardless of race, religion, sex, or national origin.  The applicants must be an immediate family member* of a Barry University Alum who is also a current benefactor of the Barry University Annual Fund. The intent is to honor Sr. Dorothy Browne and her commitment to the university by encouraging families to continue the Barry tradition.

Scholarship Guidelines:

  • The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student who is an immediate family member* of a Barry University Alum who is currently active in giving to the Barry University Annual Fund
  • 3.0 minimum GPA (All disciplines are eligible)
  • Submit a short essay (not over 250 words) on why they are deserving of this scholarship
  • One letter of recommendation from the related Barry Alumnus, or if not possible, someone who can explain why the applicant should be considered for this scholarship
  • Need for financial assistance will be considered, but will not be the single determining factor
  • The Office of Alumni Relations must received a formal thank you note from the recipient  for the award before any monies will be disbursed
*Immediate family in this case is considered a son, daughter, brother, sister or grandchild of a Barry University graduate

Terms and Conditions:

The Barry University Sr. Dorothy Browne Scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student for the academic year of September through May on an annual basis and students may reapply for the scholarship each year for a maximum of four years. The amount of the scholarship is currently $5,000, which is to be applied to tuition only. This amount may be increased as funds become available.

The student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and submit evidence of extra-curricular activities including, but not limited to, participating in at least three Alumni Association events during the year that you receive the award to be considered for the scholarship the following year. Attendance at Alumni Board of Directors meetings is encouraged.

In April of each year, the Office of Alumni Relations, which is responsible for administering the scholarship, will review the GPA status. If the recipient failed to maintain the required 3.0 GPA, he or she will lose the scholarship for the next September to May period. It will be awarded to another qualified candidate for the period. The original recipient, however, will be considered as a potential candidate the following May, if he or she brings the GPA back up to 3.0 by that time.

If the current winner of the scholarship wishes to reapply for the next year, a letter of recommendation is required from a person or persons overseeing the scholarship winner’s extra-curricular activities stating the level of participation in Alumni Board activities as well as any other activities/service.

Barry University is under no obligation to expend income in any given year.  Should the University be unable or choose not to expend monies in any given year, the income from the scholarship earned in said year may be invested back into the principal value of the scholarship, unless a decision is made by the Alumni Association Board of Directors to accrue income over a period of years.

In the event that the fair market value of the scholarship should, due to investment losses, drop below the principal value of the scholarship (herein referred to as the scholarship being ‘underwater’), the University will not expend monies from the scholarship until the fair market value of the scholarship returns to a level above that of the principal.

If you would like to write a letter of recommendation for a student applying for this scholarship, you may do so by clicking here.

The Alumni Association does not contact applicants who submit incomplete applications.
