Barry University alumna Susan Dorta, B.F.A. ’14, recently had her work showcased by Queen City Writers, a journal by the University of Cincinnati which publishes the work of undergraduate students. Dorta’s piece highlights the influence of Greek mythology on the culture and content of comic books and the superheroes they portray.
Dorta’s article, “Greek Mythology and Modern American Comic Books: How the Heroes of the Ancients Influenced the Superheroes of Today,” was influenced by her love of Greek mythology and modern superheroes along with her passion for storytelling. The text includes an analysis of the connections between historical artistic depictions of Greek myths and the pictorial representations of heroes in comics, and an examination of the archetypes and characters created by the Greeks that continue in modern superhero stories. The result is an exploration of the similarities between how mythological heroes were viewed by the ancients and how people view superheroes today.
A 2014 graduate with a BFA in art with a graphic design specialization, Dorta worked with the Center for Student Involvement as the assistant marketing coordinator designing campus posters and graphics. She also spent time at The Barry Buccaneer as a graphic designer. She was a member of numerous honor societies including Phi Eta Sigma, Kappa Gamma Pi, Alpha Chi, and Delta Epsilon Sigma.
Dorta currently works for G3 Engineering Design. She plans to return to school to achieve a master’s degree in English.
