Reflecting on the CCSI's First Five Years

Reflecting on the CCSI's First Five Years

The work of the CCSI is woven fully into the fabric of university life. From faculty development to student civic-leadership training; from staff members’ volunteer service to alumni participation in the Deliberative Dialogue Series; from community partnership building to the coordination of the Community Engagement Management System. The CCSI has lived up to its motto: “Connecting Campus and Community, Transforming Learning and Lives.”

– Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD, President, Barry University

Thanks for the great work you do and for sharing your celebrations.

– DeeDee Rasmussen, Executive Director, Florida Campus Compact

I want to congratulate Barry University for taking service seriously and acknowledging those who serve. Your president serves by example as a member of the executive committee of FloridaCampus Compact, a state affiliate of the national organization, which is devoted to improving community life and to educating students for civic and social responsibility. … I know that you are a Carnegie-classified community-engaged institution, and I congratulate you for winning that designation.

– Dwight E. Giles, Jr., PhD, Professor of Higher Education, University of Massachusetts, Boston

Thank you for contributing to my professional and personal growth as a Barry Service Corps Fellow.

– Emmanuella Carriere, alumna, Barry University

We truly appreciate our partnership with Barry University.

– Heather Wilson, Volunteer Specialist, Chapman Partnership

The CCSI staff has been very supportive and we’re very grateful for our incredible relationship with Barry University. I look forward to continue working with Barry University and its incredible students.

– Phillip Rincon, Resource Developer (Miami Office), Church World Service

Barry University is one of my favorite schools to work with because the students always bring so much positive energy to the demonstrations. I also love how Barry makes a point of committing to the relationship with the CIW and contributing to actions throughout the year. I appreciate how the university always takes time to help the students reflect on why they are supporting the CIW and how their actions make a difference.

– Natali Rodriguez, member, Student/Farmworker Alliance (supporting the Coalition of Immokalee Workers)

The CCSI fulfills a very important role for Barry University as reflected in this statement: “The CCSI provides programs, resources, and services that facilitate University engagement with communities at the local, regional, national, and global levels.”

– Hernan Londono, PhD, Associate Chief Information Officer, Barry University

Congratulations on your 5th anniversary and for the wonderful things that the CCSI has accomplished and in which it continues to be engaged. I am both proud and humbled to have been a part of the conception of the Center.

– M. Sylvia Fernandez, PhD, Professorand Associate Dean, ADSOE, Barry University

I want to congratulate you for such a wonderful acknowledgement of all of us who serve our community. May we all continue to give, teach, support and collaborate for the future of all humanity.

– Sandra Acevedo, Coordinator of Local and Global Outreach, School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences, Barry University

The [Community Engagement] Awards Ceremony was quite an impressive experience even for a Barry employee!

– Pawena “Winnie” Sirimangkala, Associate Professor of Communication and Director of the Honors Program, Barry University

The CCSI does such excellent work. You all are so impressive!

– Mureen Shaw, DNP, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Barry University

One lesson that I have learned from community engagement is that students are highly motivated when faculty actively participate in their projects. I often volunteer with them and share my stories of service with them. It is important not only to talk the talk but also to walk the walk.

– Pamela Hall, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology and 2016 Community Engaged Scholarship Award winner, Barry University

It was a pleasure to work with CCSI, and ever so happy to see my first major event at Barry [the Community Engagement Awards] go so well.
