Making Strides in Public Relations: Our first alumnus earned a Certificate in Principles of Public Relations.

Joselie LaGuerre is the first Barry graduate and member of the BarryU student chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) to earn a Certificate in Principles of Public Relations.

“I am very excited about how many more doors there are available to me thanks to my certificate,” Joselie shares. After graduation in December of 2020, the English major took the prep course for the examination to receive her Certificate in Principles of Public Relations, which is awarded by the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR). Joselie actively participated in the 14-week prep course held through Zoom meetings.

“I think getting this certificate helped me think more critically about communication and how to respond to a crisis as well as understanding how to research and tailor my message to any audience.” Joselie says.

She was inspired to pursue PR after taking COM390, Public Relations: Principles & Issues. She then joined the BarryU Student Chapter of the FPRA. “My hope is that my English major will help give me an edge in concise and effective communication, which I feel is essential for PR and was the core of my studies,” she says. She is currently building a career in copywriting.

Her effort exemplifies the importance of bridging your college education with your desired career path.
