MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University tennis teams were tabbed to host the 2008 Southeast Region Tennis Tournaments.

For the men’s team, it is their 15th straight appearance in the tournament. The Bucs, ranked first in the Southeast Region, will host Palm Beach Atlantic, Rollins and Tusculum in the sub-regional. Barry is 17-4 on the season and is the champion of the Sunshine State Conference. The Bucs are led by Patrick Rittenauer (6-5 at #1--25th Division II; seventh region) and Ales Svigelj (8-4 at #2--20th Division II; fifth region). The pair are also ranked second nationally and first in the region in doubles. Emanuel Fraitzl (11-2 at #3--12th in region) and Andrew Sharnov (15-3 at #4--14th in region) The Bucs have won more than 85 percent of them matches at the three, four and six flights, giving them one of the deepest lineups in the country.

The Bucs will face #8 Palm Beach Atlantic. The Sailfish are making their first team NCAA Tournament appearance in any sport in school history. Brock Newton (21-3 at #1--24th Division II; sixth region) leads the Sailfish. The 6-4 senior has been pushed to three sets just once this year. The Bucs beat the Sailfish in the regular season 7-0 in a match shortened by darkness.

The other side of the bracket features #4 Rollins against #5 Tusculum. The Tars are ranked fourth in the region after finishing fourth in the SSC Tournament. Leading the way for the Tars this season are All-SSC First Team singles and doubles members Brian Compton (15th Division II; fourth region) and Jonathan Gomez (50th Division II; 10th region), who each posted records of 13-5 in singles and 17-4 as a doubles duo. The Tusculum Pioneers are led by senior Carlos Garcia (18-1 at #3), the SAC Player of the Year and SAC tournament MVP. Garcia is one of just two seniors on the team along with Nicolas Bigler (15-4), a 6-6 sophomore from Chernex, Switzerland who plays number one.

The winners of the sub-regional advance to the finals at the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival in Houston, Texas, May 14-17. The championships consist of a 16-team single elimination tournament. The Southeast-1 sub-regionals will face the winners of the North Central-2 grouping (top seed--Northwest Missouri State).

For the women, it is their 14th straight and 16th overall appearance in the national tournament. Ranked second in the region and 10th in the national poll, Barry is 18-6 on the season and came in second at the SSC Tournament. Ildiko Csordas (14-5 at #1--14th Division II; fourth region) leads three Buccaneers in the rankings. A three-time ITA singles All-American, she anchors the Barry lineup at the top spot. She teams with Caroline Stevens at #1 doubles (12-6--8th Division II; second region). Stevens (14-6 at #2--26th Division II; seventh region) was named SSC Frehsman of the Year. Angie Werschel (16-4 at #3--35th Division II; ninth region) is another super rookie for the Bucs.

The Bucs face Saint Leo in the first round. The Bucs took the regular season match 8-1 from the Lions on Feb. 16. The Lions (13-10) come in ranked 34th in the national poll. Asmaa Tazi (15-6 at #2) and Veronica Queen (14-9 at #4) lead the Lions.

The second semifinal pits #3 Rollins against #6 Tusculum. For the Tars, senior Marnie Mahler (16-4 at #1--13th Division II; third region) was named to the All-SSC First Team in singles and in doubles with Roshni Luthra (19-2 at #4). The Lady Pioneers are led by the lone senior, Bronwyn Hartley (16-6 at #2).
