Tennis Players Earn Academic All-America Honors

TOWSON, Md. – Barry University senior men’s tennis player Marco Mokrzycki and junior women’s tennis player Akemi Maehama each were named Second-Team Capital One Division II At-Large Academic All-Americans as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Mokrzycki, a Hannover, Germany, native, had a 3.41 grade point average in finance, and received his bachelor’s degree in May. He was a Third-Team Academic All-American selection last year.

Mokrzycki went 12-3 in singles with an 8-3 record against nationally-ranked opponents. He was 23-3 in doubles, and became Barry’s school career doubles leader with 79 victories. He helped the Buccaneers complete the first perfect season in school history as Barry went 29-0 to win the NCAA National Championship.

Maehama, originally from Tokyo, Japan, had a 3.87 in physical education. She was an Academic All-District selection in 2012.

Maehama had a 19-1 singles record, winning 16 straight matches to cap a season the Bucs went 27-1 with a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals. She was 5-1 in doubles play.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
