1989: A Season
to Remember
Bucs Win First-Ever National Soccer Championship Miami
Shores, Florida ... The 1989 season was a championship year to remember.
Mike Covone's soccer team earned Barry its first national title
in any sport, highlighting the school's Golden Jubilee celebration.
The Buccaneers culminated a 18-game undefeated
streak by blasting Keene State 4-0 in the finals to earn the NCAA
Division II championship.
Rarely can a team in any sport boast of an undefeated
season, but that's what the Bucs accomplished in 1989. The only
blemish on the perfect season was a 0-0 tie to Division I power
Central Florida.
How dominant was Barry in '89? The Bucs yielded
only three goals all season. They closed out the year with nine
straight shutouts spanning 891 minutes. Over the season Covone's
squad posted 15 shutouts in 18 games. The Bucs outscored their opponents
55-3, dominating the season and romping to the championship.
Covone was named National Coach-of-the Year. Kyllene
Carter, Jennifer Faccone, and Carilyn Hormilla were named NSCAA
All-Americans. Faccone and Shannon Connor were selected Adidas Academic
All-Americans.
Things didn't always come easily during the season.
Six of the 18 games were decided by 1-0 scores. In the first game
of the year, freshman Jennifer Shannon broke a scoreless tie with
a goal late in the first half and the Bucs held on.
In the regular season finale against Tulsa, neither
team was able to score in regulation or the first overtime. Carol
Ashmore broke the ice 42 seconds into the second overtime and Lisa
Keller broke the game open with a goal 14 seconds later. Senior
Dawn Wagner closed the scoring, keeping the Bucs' perfect season
intact.
Barry rolled through the national tournament defeating
Adelphi 4-0 in the semifinals and Keene State by the same score
in the final.
