1992: Barry Captures its Second NCAA Division II Soccer Title

1992 SoccerAdelphia, New York ... The 1992 season brought Barry University its second NCAA Division II national soccer title in four years, allowing head coach Mike Covone's seniors to achieve bookend championships in their college careers. After claiming their first national title in 1989, the Buccaneers reached the Final Four each of the next three seasons, culminating their accomplishments with a 3-2 win over Adelphi in the National Championship game.

In becoming the only team to reach all five NCAA Division II Final Four's, Barry achieved impressive statistics for its seniors. Over four years, they helped the Bucs earn an overall record of 57-8-1, while allowing just 40 goals and registering 40 shutouts.

The 1992 title match featured a fast start and an exciting finish. Barry scored twice in the first 8:25 with goals from Michelle Demko and Jennifer Shannon. Demko scored at 5:37 on an assist from Stacie Fanelli to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Barry's second goal was credited to Shannon when her shot went wide of the net, but was deflected into the goal by a defender. Demko was credited with an assist and the Bucs led 2-0 with less than nine minutes gone in the championship match.

Adelphi rallied early in the second half with two goals in just over four minutes. Gabrielle Caruso recorded both of the Panthers goals, scoring on a volley at 56:44, then claiming a tap-in at 60:05.

With the score tied 2-2, the Buccaneers wasted little time in creating the winning goal. At 62:59, Shannon redirected a crossing pass from Erin Jaeger, scoring her second goal of the game.

Shannon was named Offensive MVP, and Carilynn Hormilla, Chris Carlucci, and Jaeger were named to the All-Tournament Team.
