| 1993: Buccaneers
Win Back-to-Back National Soccer Championships
Miami
Shores, Florida … The Barry University women's soccer team
continued its national dominance in 1993, winning its second consecutive
NCAA Division II National Championship. It was Barry's third title
in five years and its sixth straight trip to the NCAA Final Four.
Barry forged a 17-1 record and spent most of the
year as the top-ranked team in the nation. Barry's only loss came
in the third game of the year to Florida International, which went
on to reach the NCAA Division I quarterfinals.
The Buccaneers responded by winning 15 consecutive
games on their way to the national title. The string of victories
was the longest in Barry history, breaking the old record of 13
set by the Bucs' first national championship team in 1989.
Barry played its best game of the year in the
National Championship game at Buccaneer Field. The Bucs won 2-0
and outshot Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 21-3.
Amy Burrill provided the home crowd with excitement
when her 28-yard half-volley reached the upper left corner of the
net at 11:59. The Bucs added an insurance goal at 56:03, when Michelle
Richie's cross from the left side was redirected into the net by
a Mustang.
Burrill was named the Defensive MVP, and Janna
Schimmels, Erin Jaeger, Heather Jaeger, and Jennifer Strong were
named to the All-Tournament Team.
Schimmels concluded the year with a national best
0.38 goals against average and 10.81 shutouts, including shutouts
in both the semifinal and championship matches. On the season, Barry
outscored its opponents 56-7.
