Doris Jane Hart attended Barry from 1943 to 1945.
She later graduated from the University of Miami, and received an
honorary degree from Barry. She was an outstanding tennis player
who went on to an illustrious professional career. She won the U.S.
Women's Open singles title in 1954 and 1955. She also won one Australian
Open singles title (1949), three French Open singles titles (1950-52),
and one Wimbledon singles championship (1952), giving her an impressive
seven Grand Slam singles titles.
Hart claimed doubles and mixed doubles titles
in all four Grand Slam events. She won the U.S. Open doubles title
four consecutive years (1951-54) and achieved the U.S. Open mixed
doubles crown five straight years (1951-55). She totaled 14 Grand
Slam doubles titles and 15 Grand Slam mixed doubles crowns. She
also won the U.S. Hard Court singles title in 1949, earned the U.S.
Clay Court singles title in 1950, and won several other national
titles in doubles and mixed doubles. Her play in the Wightman Cup
against Great Britain -- she was 14-0 in singles and 8-1 in doubles
-- helped the U.S. dominate the event between 1946 and 1955. |
