Ronald Johnson played on Barry's first men's basketball
team in 1984-85, and also played from 1986-87 through 1988-89. He
scored a school-record 1,723 points during his career. Johnson played
for three different coaches, but continued to provide outstanding
performances. He saw action in 100 games, and, along with his great
scoring total, set the Barry career record with 196 steals. He earned
221 assists (3rd when he finished)) and blocked 106 shots (2nd when
he finished). He was named Barry Male Co-Athlete-of-the-Year for
1987-88. His jersey (#12) was retired by Barry on November 17, 1989.
Johnson was Barry's first 1,000-point scorer and
was team captain his last three years. Johnson received the team's
Player-of-the-Year award twice and was named Defensive Player-of-the-Year
once. Johnson became an assistant coach with the Buccaneers in 1989-90.
He had the distinction of being featured on the Miami NBC-TV affiliate
in a January, 1994 segment called "Making a Difference." |
