LAKELAND, Fla. – Behind solid second half play, the Barry University men’s soccer team (7-3-1, 1-2-1 SSC) picked up their first Sunshine State Conference victory with a 2-1 win over the host Florida Southern Moccasins (6-5-0, 1-4-0 SSC) earlier tonight at Barnett Field.
In the first half, both teams narrowly missed on scoring opportunities within the first 10 minutes of play. However, Florida Southern’s Asa Pepia came in off the bench at the 13:21 mark and gave the Moccasins an early 1-0 lead after a pair of one-touch passes from teammates Ola Sandquist and Jonathan Streets in the 17th minute.
Later in the half, the Buccaneers challenged the Florida Southern defense inside the 18-yard box. Barry’s Trismarc Saunders ripped a shot that bounced away from the Moc keeper Clint Harris. Pat Anderson recovered the rebound and passed the ball back to Mirza Halibasic for the goal at the 32:56 mark and the Buccaneers headed into the half tied 1-1.
In the second half, Harris made a critical defensive mistake in goal for Florida Southern and fouled the Bucs’ Henry Apaloo inside the 18-yard box, which led to a Barry penalty kick. Apaloo capitalized on the opportunity and gave the Bucs a 2-1 lead with 37:09 left to play in the period. Behind the improved second half play, that was all the Bucs needed to pick up their first league win of the season.
Barry’s Chris Rich faced 15 shots and collected three saves to improve to 7-2-1 on the year. Florida Southern keeper Harris picked up five saves, but allowed two goals to fall to 6-5-0.
The Buccaneers will return to Buccaneer Field on Saturday, Oct. 8 hosting Eckerd College in SSC action at 7 pm.
