MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—A trio of Buccaneers were selected in the Major League Baseball First-year Player Draft last week. Senior outfielder John Servidio went in the 26th round (794 overall) to the New York Mets, while senior outfielder Andrew Frezza (952) and junior pitcher Bobby Hernandez (1162) went to the Boston Red Sox in the 31st and 38th rounds respectively.
The three teammates off one team tops the mark of two set last year as the most Buccaneers taken in one draft and Servidio’s 26th round selection is the highest for a Buccaneer since Ricky Sanchez went in the 25th round in 2005. The Bucs tied with Tampa and Florida Southern with three selections, while Saint Leo had one, giving the Sunshine State Conference 10 picks in the draft.
Servidio led the Buccaneers in triples (4), homers (14) and RBI (69), while hitting .366 with 54 runs, 16 doubles and stole 10 of 14 bases. He also tossed 4.2 innings on the mound with a 1.93 ERA with two strikeouts and one walk. He will sign on Tuesday and report to the Mets' facility in Port St. Lucie, Fla., then will likely be assigned to the rookie affiliate in Kingsport, Tenn.
Frezza led the team in doubles (17), while hitting .392 with six homers, 58 RBI, 61 runs and 15-of-20 stolen bases. He will sign on Thursday and report to the GCL Red Sox.
Hernandez led the Bucs with a 7-0 record and 1.58 ERA to set Buccaneer single season records for winning percentage and ERA. He struck out 51 and walked 19 in 51.1 innings. He is currently with the Chatham A's in the Cape Cod League and has no plans to sign at this time.
