ORLANDO—Junior Carlos Velez was named first-team All-Sunshine State Conference after leading the Buccaneers back to the NCAA Regional. Voting for the all-conference team was conducted among the league's men's golf coaches and sports information directors.
Velez leads the Bucs with a 72.8 scoring average, which currently sits first in Barry history ahead of the mark of 72.97 set by Hernan Borja in 2006-07 when the Bucs won the national championship.
Velez tied the Bucs’ record for lowest score in relation to par with a -6 in the second round of the SSC Tournament. His score has counted for the team total in 23 of 25 rounds this year and he leads the team in 13 statistical categories.
He was joined on the squad by fellow junior Victor Billskoog and sophomore Chris Carlin who were both named to the second team.
Billiskoog is second on the team in scoring at 73.36 strokes per round, while playing in eight of 10 tournaments. He has a low round of 68 and a high finish of tied for fourth at the Buccaneer Invitational when Barry captured the team title.
Carlin, the only golfer to play in every tournament this season, is fourth on the team in scoring at 74.98 strokes per round. He fired a 67 on the opening round of the Buccaneer Invitational and captured the individual medalist at the NSU Shark Invitational in the fall.
Barry will be the No. 4 seed in the South Region Tournament Monday, May 4 through Wednesday, May 6 at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Golf Course in Florence, Alabama. The field is well represented by the Sunshine State Conference, as Nova Southeastern, Florida Southern, Lynn and Rollins will join the Bucs as they will compete.
