MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers (8-3-1, 2-2-1 SSC) evened their Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer record with a 2-0 win over the Eckerd Tritons (5-4-2, 3-2-0 SSC) on Saturday night at Buccaneer Field.
The game started with a chess match in the midfield as the Tritons started five midfielders to the Bucs’ four. Eckerd maintained possession in the first half, out-shooting the Bucs 6-2. Buccaneer keeper Chris Rich made four saves in the period to keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, the Bucs came out with a renewed vigor and held a commanding 12-1 edge in shots. They finally broke through in the 60th minute when Patrick Miller sent a corner kick into the box. Eitan Arbel knocked it straight up in the air and when it came down Stefan Tangen was on the other end, knocking the ball past Triton keeper Chris Howe for the only score the Bucs would need.
The Bucs added an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Mirza Halilbasic played a long ball out of the midfield and Pat Anderson out-raced the Triton defense to the ball. As he neared the goal, Richard Spencer caught up with him, but could not control his rush, knocking Anderson down for the foul. Halilbasic converted the penalty kick and the Bucs led 2-0.
Both teams had five shots on goal, but Barry held a 14-7 edge overall. Rich stopped all five of the Triton tries, but Howe only managed three for Eckerd.
The Bucs face SSC surprise team Saint Leo on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6:00 pm, then host Tusculum on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
