PACE, Fla. – Johanna Soderstrom (Fr., Onsala, Sweden) qualified for the NCAA national championship firing a three-round 10-over-par 226 (75-77-74) score and led the Barry University women’s golf team to a fifth-place tie at the NCAA South Region tournament hosted at the Stonebrook Golf Club on Tuesday by West Florida.
Rollins claimed the regional championship with a three-round 899 (295-307-297) score and will be one of two teams representing the South Region at the NCAA National tournament in Allendale, Mich. Lynn finished six strokes back in second place with a three-round 905 (315-299-291) score and will also advance to the NCAA tournament. Nova Southeastern (309-314-302=925) and Florida Southern (308-320-298=926) finished one stroke apart and third and fourth respectively. Barry (308-316-36=930) and West Florida (299-318-313=930) finished in a fifth-place tie.
Soderstrom (75-77-74=226) finished tied for sixth overall out of 33 individuals and was the Buccaneer individual leader and will represent Barry as an individual at the NCAA National Tournament. She is the first women’s player to return to the national tournament since the 2002 Buccaneers advanced as a team.
"I'm extremely proud of how Johanna performed at the regional," head coach Patti Rizzo said. "She has the skills and is a strong willed, determined individual. She has the passion to become one of the best golfers in Division II and will represent Barry well at the national tournament."
Shannon Langhardt (78-77-78=233) finished tied for 18th overall while RemiJin Camping finished 22nd overall with a three-round 234 (76-83-75) score. Gabbi Waranoi (79-79-84=242) finished 28th, while Kelly Rose Kronen (85-91-79=255) rounded out the Buccaneer team score.
Lynn’s Natasha Morgan finished as the tournament individual medalist winning by three strokes. She finished with a three-round 217 score (75-72-70) over second-place teammate Liz Whitehouse (75-75-70=220).
Soderstrom will participate in the NCAA Division II National Tournament, which will be hosted at the Meadows Golf Club in Allendale, Mich. May 10-13 for a 72 hole, four-round tournament.
