LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Barry University men's golf team finished the first two rounds of play at the Matlock Collegiate Classic tied for 11th out of 15 teams earlier today at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club.
The Buccaneers battled through the cold and wind in the opening round of the tournament and carded a 306 team score to finish in a three-way tie for eighth with Georgia College & State University and conference rival Lynn. However, a second-round 311 score dropped the Bucs three spots to an 11th-place tie at the conclusion of the first day.
Host Florida Southern currently boasts as the tournament leader with a two-round 588 (288-300) score. They were the only team to fire an even-par 288 score in either round. Lynn shaved 14 strokes off their opening round and carded a 292 in the second to move from an eighth-place tie to second, just 10 strokes off the tournament leader. West Florida (290-309=599), Missouri (299-306=605), and Florida Gulf Coast (297-309=606) rounded out the top five respectively.
Barry's Nick Gillaspy was the most consistent in both rounds carding a 150 (76-74) two-round score and finished the first day tied for 15th to lead the Buccaneers. Jack Ehlers, who joined the team this spring, finished three strokes behind Gillaspy with a two-round score of 153 (76-77) and tied for 27th. After firing a one-over-par opening round 73 score, Hernan Borja carded an 81 in the second round for a two-round 154 score and tied at 31, while Juan Weissenberg (81-79=160) and John Quigley (81-84=165) rounded out the Bucs' team score and finished T64 and 70 respectively.
Florida Southern's Greg Koch turned in a three-under-par 69 score in the opening round and an even-par 72 in the second to finish with a two-round three-under-par 141 score and is currently the tournament individual medalist.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, Feb. 14 beginning with an 8 am tee off.
